about

My name is Rowan. I'm a writer, and I live in Los Angeles with my husband and four-year-old daughter (read about how I chose her name).

For as long as I can remember, names have been my thing. I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out just exactly why I love them like I do, but when it comes right down to it, the reason doesn't matter. Names are wicked.

Welcome to my crippling obsession.

  3. This blog is great and I've gotten some good ideas. I'm due with my first baby--a girl--at the end of this coming January. I, too, am a literature lover (BA in Medieval French Literature) but am very overwhelmed with naming a human!! What a big job. I feel like it's getting down to the wire. I was dead set on Ruby and then realized how trendy it is becoming. Major bummer. Now I'm thinking Margot...Eudora...I dont know! I'm getting so overwhelmed. Any advice??

  4. hi Marjorie, thanks for reading! Ruby is a lovely choice, and though it's definitely on-trend, I always say, if you love a name, popularity really doesn't matter. However, here are some other choices (I love Margot, and Eudora is nice, too) you might like -- Allegra, Anouk, Edith, Eulalie, Frida, Georgina, Jemima, Josephine, Lilou, Louisa, Mabel, Malou, Neva, Odette, Oona, Paloma, Romy, Sabine, Veda, Viola and Zelda. Congratulations on your baby girl!

  5. Beyonce` and Jay-Z baby officially named Blue Ivy Carter. As Someone addicted to this blog, I must have your thoughts lol.

  6. I was first distracted by the unattractive initials (BIC -- pens, lighters, anyone?) -- though either name on its own or in a different combination would've been fine, Ivy is green. Blue Ivy sounds like a tacky wedding theme.

  8. I've been obsessively reading your blog start to finish, over and over again. I love, love, love it! I also think you and your daughter are absolutely adorable.

You've definitely become an inspiration to me. Real talk.
